Camping

The mister and I spent the weekend camping on the shores of Lake Belle Taine in northern Minnesota.

It rained.

I mean, it was sunny for enough of the weekend that we didn't pack up the tent and head for home, but it rained. We're talking deluges of biblical proportions. It rained so hard that you couldn't hear the individual drops tap-tappitying on the tent. It sounded instead like someone was flinging five-gallon buckets of water at us.

The mister and I can end droughts when we camp. Desert hasn't seen precipitation in 6 months? Oh, well, we'll plan a trip and pitch a tent and fix that drought for you. Northern Minnesota facing drought? We'll roll out our sleeping bags and produce 3 inches of rain in an hour. No worries.

Despite the dampness of the weekend, we had a good time, getting in some fishing (the mister), some book reading (me) and a shameful amount of bacon consumption (both of us).

Ugh, raining while tent camping blows. Especially if your tent leaks, as ours does. GROSS.

Last year, we planned a 4-day camping trip that we looked forward to ALL YEAR. And it rained 3 3/4 of the days. My husband & I got into such a huge fight, I tried to kick him and ended up with a deep bone bruise on my shin (because I missed, naturally) that's still tender 9 months later.

So. Rain while camping? Makes me homicidal.

ANYway, I'm sorry it rained on your trip and your dog is so cute!

P.S. I was going to suggest we go camping together sometime, but I'm sure my story of rain-induced kicking frightened you away. :)

Hmmmm....camping bacon is the best. Nice pontoon, btw!

P&D - I would TOTALLY camp with you because I get the feeling we'd laugh a lot. We'd both probably threaten to drown our husbands in the lake, but you and I would get along well.

Also, how did you miss and bruise your shin? Did you smack it on something else?

Molly: the pontoon is not ours. Sister-in-law's father-in-law (follow that?) works for a boat company, so when he takes a vacation he gets to borrow one for the week. The mister and I mooch.

Hi. I have a blog at www.picturecamping.com where I feature people's posts about camping, and I would like to send my readers your way. Of course I would give you credit for quotes and would link back to your site.

Thanks for considering this,

Well, I connected with his leg, but he had it at the right angle so that it felt like I hit a piece of steel or something. My shin hurt like HELL. I thought I broke it. (He was fine, naturally.)

We never fight like that ever, ever, EVER, but on that day? With the rain after all the months of looking forward to a nice relaxing trip? And having to both set up AND take down our tent in a freaking SQUALL while the dog hunched miserably under a tiny tree getting muddy and smelly?

Well, he got crabby and started being mean to me, in earshot of everyone around us, and we both lost it.

Not our proudest moment, by any means. :)

Have you guys ever camped at St. Croix or Baylor? Those are my two favorite spots. How about you?

We get really crabby when the weather sucks, too. Like you said, you look forward to the trip for so long and then the weather just ruins it. You can't hike or swim or even sit around the fire - you just huddle, miserable and wet, in your tent and fight. SUCKY.

We've never camped at either St. Croix or Baylor (but we will now - Baylor even seems nice and close).

My favorites are all along the North Shore - Gooseberry Falls, Tettegouche, and Cascade River. The mister loves Father Hennepin State Park and Scenic State Park. He's more about the fishing and I'm more about the pretty stuff to look at.
